Concussion Therapy
Concussions are mild traumatic brain injuries that are caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head, which can result in impairments of neurologic function with symptoms that include dizziness, amnesia, loss of consciousness, headaches and much more. Concussion physical therapy is treatment directed at restoring full function and a safe return to activity.
What does treatment entail?
Each patient will go through a thorough medical screening and physical examination which will assess the following areas:
- Cognitive function
- Oculomotor (eye muscle) function
- Affective (emotional) status
- Cervical spine (neck)
- Headache symptoms
- Cardiovascular system
- Vestibular system (inner ear)
Your physical therapist will tailor a specific and individualized program based on their examination's findings and communication with other involved professionals, such as physicians. The treatment regimen will address issues in the above systems to restore full function.
In addition to this, discussion and education will be provided on how to return to work, play and/or school, if applicable. Our therapists will work with your physician to ensure a smooth step-wise progression back to normal function.
FAQs
Length of care is extremely person-specific, and can range from one to 12 weeks, depending on the severity and symptoms. It is vital that appropriate progressions are made to properly assimilate to normal daily tasks again without symptoms.
Your therapist will be able to provide specifics based on your examination and progression through your course of care. Our normal protocol requires a full return to normal daily tasks and school only once symptom free, following with a specific outline of a plan to return to practice and play before one can fully return to sports or previous activities.
Baseline Testing is a test which we provide that looks at various systems in your body, such as your cognitive function, motor skills and vestibulo-ocular function via an online test known as the ImPACT test. The ImPACT test is a heavily researched and FDA approved exam that is used to diagnose and manage concussions. The test is performed as a baseline prior to any concussions, and can be used as a comparison following testing that is performed post-concussion.
Baseline Testing is not a requirement, but it is a good tool to assist with progression through rehabilitation.
We provide Baseline Testing at each of our locations.
